Nubeena and White Beach Cat Survey

Cats are much-loved companions, providing joy, comfort and support to their owners and in most cases they live harmoniously within their neighbourhood. However, they can also be a nuisance to neighbours, can kill native animals and can carry toxoplasmosis that may infect people, livestock and native mammals.

Cat Survey

Tasman Council is working with Ten Lives, through the TassieCat program, on a Cat Management Community Project aimed at improving cat welfare and reducing the negative impacts of cats on residents and local wildlife in the Tasman Municipality.

Between March and June 2025, a survey was conducted for residents in the Nubeena and White Beach areas to gain insights into:

  • how many people own cats

  • whether residents are affected by other people’s cats or by stray/feral cats

  • any barriers to better cat management

You can view the survey results here: Nubeena and White Beach Cat Survey

Council and Ten Lives are now looking at using the findings to address key barriers to responsible cat ownership, including:

  • ensuring pet cats are desexed and microchipped

  • preventing pet cats from harming native wildlife

  • reducing nuisance behaviour caused by cats on neighbouring properties
