Recycle REWARD$

The Tasmanian Government’s Container Refund Scheme – Recycle REWARD$ commenced on 1-May-2025.

It’s two objectives are to reduce litter and to increase recycling. Beverage containers make up 45 per cent of Tasmania’s litter. It is estimated that Recycle REWARD$ will reduce this by almost 50 per cent, as well as doubling recycling rates of eligible beverage containers which supports our circular economy.

You will receive a 10c refund for every eligible beverage container you return to a designated container refund point in Tasmania or you can donate your refund directly to a local charity or registered community organisation.

Full details of the scheme can be found at the Recycle REWARD$ website https://recyclerewards.com.au

Refund Points

Tasman’s Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) for returning your eligible containers is at the Nubeena Hardware – 1556 Nubeena Rd. Check the opening hours at the following link: https://recyclerewards.com.au/location/1556-nubeena-road-nubeena/

When you put your containers into the RVM you will get a refund in the form of:

  • a voucher that can be exchanged for cash or a discount on shopping at a partner retailer
  • a direct deposit to your chosen bank account or PayPal via the Recycle Rewards app (download via the Google Play Store or Apple App store)
  • a donation to a charity or a community organisation registered as a Donation Partner with the scheme

There is also a RVM behind Coles in Sorell. A map of all refund points can be found at the following link:

Eligible Drink Containers

Look for the 10c refund mark as a general guide.
The majority of 150ml to 3L drink containers are eligible for a 10 cent refund – provided they are made from glass, plastic, aluminium, steel or liquid paperboard (the material often used for small boxed juice drinks, or small flavoured milk containers etc).

Drink containers should be in good condition (uncrushed, empty and with the label and barcode intact) so they can be returned to a dedicated refund point. Lids should be left on. The container does not need to be cleaned but must be empty of all liquid.

The following drink containers are not part of the scheme but should continue to be placed in your kerbside recycling bin:

  • plain milk bottles or cartons
  • flavoured milk containers 1L and over
  • glass wine bottles
  • glass spirit bottles
  • cordial bottles
  • juice containers 1L and over
  • household food containers (e.g., tuna cans, tinned vegetables)

(eligible containers that are placed in your kerbside recycling bin will be recycled as normal)
