Community Resilience

Following a series of bushfires impacting the East Coast of Tasmania, most recently at Dolphin Sands and St Helens, it’s critical that every household takes action now to be prepared for any upcoming bushfire treats to our community.

Prepare You Property

  • Clear leaves, twigs and flammable materials from gutters, lawns and decks
  • Prune trees and shrubs to reduce ladder fuels and maintain at least a 5m gap between canopies
  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, eaves and vents to reduce ember entry
  • Create a fuel break zone around your home and maintain a safe perimeter

Make a Bushfire Plan

  • Decide early whether you will stay and defend or leave – “leaving early is always the safest option”
  • Assemble an emergency kit: water, non-perishables, medication, first aid (including masks for smoke), pets, documents and communication tools
  • Understand the Fire Danger Rating and Warning Levels – monitor TasALERT, Tasmanian Fire Service, ABC local radio and Bureau of Meteorology

Stay Alert

  • Keep your phone and radio tuned to TasALERT alerts and ABC broadcasts
  • If you see smoke during fire season, call 000 immediately – registered burns are not permitted during high-risk periods
  • Know all evacuation routes and have backup plans, including identified local safer places or evacuation centres.

Recent East Coast fire show how fast conditions can change – and how critical early preparation is.  Take these actions NOW to protect yourself and your community.
