Tasman Council is marking Biodiversity Month by teaming up with neighbouring southern Tasmanian councils for a Biodiversity Blitz this September — a friendly challenge inviting residents to step outside and record the plants, animals and fungi they spot in their backyard, park or favourite local place.
Running from 15 to 30 September, the Blitz will see Tasman compete with Clarence City Council, Glenorchy City Council, the City of Hobart, Huon Valley Council, Kingborough Council and Sorell Council. The council with the most observations takes the title — but the real winners are everyone who gets outdoors and discovers more of our local biodiversity.
Getting involved is easy — and gloriously free. Grab the iNaturalist app, point your phone at something living – that bird that just woke you up, your favourite tree, a glowing fungus (good luck with that), something weird in a rock pool – and upload it. Every record during the Blitz helps boost Tasman’s tally.
There’s no restrictions on whether the plant, animal or fungus is native or a wild pest species (weed, feral deer, …) but we don’t want pictures of your pet cat or your chook.
The Blitz is fun, but it also matters. Records submitted through iNaturalist feed into the Tasmanian Government’s Natural Values Atlas, helping inform development assessments and environmental decisions across the state. The more observations we collect, the clearer the picture of biodiversity in our region.
All Tasman observations made during the event will be added to Council’s dedicated project page, where participants can see what others have found nearby. Results from all participating councils will be tallied through a shared regional project, with the winner announced after the Blitz closes.
No cost, no registration — just curiosity and a phone/camera.
