Building & Planning

Building

Building and plumbing permits must be obtained from Council prior to commencement of works.  Plans should be submitted showing details of the proposed building and plumbing works in order for Council to issue a permit.

A building permit is required for building, demolition, alterations, additions and change of use of any property.

Council's primary concern is the implementation of requirements from the Building Code of Australia and the Local Government (Building and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1993.

Inspections ensure that required standards in relation to building works are maintained.  Processing of all building applications are completed in accordance with the time limits prescribed under Building Regulations.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE!

A BUILDING PERMIT CANNOT BE ISSUED BEFORE THE FOLLOWING PERMITS ARE ISSUED:

  • PLANNING PERMIT - PLANNING PERMITS WILL BE ISSUED BY COUNCIL WITHIN 42 DAYS OF APPLICATION - PROVIDING THAT THERE IS NO INFORMATION REQUIRED BY COUNCIL FROM THE APPLICANT.
  • PLUMBING PERMIT & SPECIAL PLUMBING PERMIT (WHERE REQUIRED) - THE PLUMBING PERMIT AND SPECIAL PLUMBING PERMIT WILL BE ISSUED BY COUNCIL WITHIN 14 DAYS OF THE APPLICATION BEING MADE - PROVIDING THAT THERE IS NO INFORMATION REQUIRED BY COUNCIL FROM THE APPLICANT.

Buiding Amnesty 2009

Have you undertaken bulding or plumbing work since 1 July 1994 without obtaining the relevant Council approvals?  If so, the Building Amnesty 2009 may be the best way to resolve these matters without the repercussion of having a penalty by way of an infringement notice or prosecution being applied.

Planning

Council's planning program is focussed on sustainable development, the maintenance and enhancement of land-use planning, along with appropriate building control services.

Its primary role is to ensure compliance with legislative requirements in relation to land use planning, development applications, building applications and enforcement.

The implementation of Tasman Council's new Planning Scheme will continue during 2008 and, when implemented, will see that all development applications within the Municipality are treated in a consistent manner. Prior to the introduction of the new Scheme, planning in the Municipality continues to be governed by two planning schemes: the 'old' Sorell Scheme for properties on the Forestier Peninsula; and the Tasman Scheme for properties on the Tasman Peninsula.

Street Naming Policy
Council has recently adopted a Street Naming Policy for new streets.

As part of this policy Council is seeking nominations for future street names from the community. Nominations should include an explanation as to the significance of the name and how it relates to the history and/or development of the Municipality.

Nominations of suggested names for new streets should be forwarded to the Planning Department of the Council.
