PENINSULA IN THE PICTURE WITH EAGLEHAWK WEBCAM
The Tasman Peninsula is 'in the picture' with a new cliff-top webcam now featuring iconic views of Pirates Bay. The webcam, installed with the support of the Tasman Council, is the latest in the Coastview stable of locations around Tasmania, offering images of some of the State's most famous scenery.
The Eaglehawk Neck cam will be a major boost for tourism businesses on the Peninsula, as well as a valuable service for surfers, boaters, divers, and fishermen.
Tasman Council Mayor Jan Barwick said the ever-changing view over Eaglehawk Neck was one of the best known tourism images in Tasmania and the camera was an important piece of supporting infrastructure.
"The Pirates Bay view is remembered by all those who see it and the webcam will enable people interstate and overseas to see its beautiful moods at all times of the day,'' Mrs Barwick said.
"The Peninsula is also Tasmania's premiere charter and game fishing destination, and the camera's view over Doo Town and the boat ramp is invaluable for those planning a fishing trip.''
Coastview Business Development Manager Robert Winter said the webcam was a key asset for Tasmania's surfing community.
"Our original webcam was installed in April 2002 in the Officer's Mess, but was removed when the building was demolished in 2008,'' Mr Winter said.
We've had so many people contacting us about the Eaglehawk cam because it is the only view of the lower east coast and logging onto the webcam can often save people hours of driving time, significant petrol costs, and lower their carbon footprint.
"The Tasman Council recognised the value in the webcam and must be congratulated for the assistance it has provided to embrace new technologies in these tight economic times.
"The Tasman Council's recognition of the economic value of iconic webcams is a leading example for councils around Tasmania.''
Coastview has a network of webcams operating across Tasmania at Clifton Beach, Arthurs Lake, Hobart, Bay of Fires and Cremorne, with others in planning.
